South Dakota Vacation: Mitchell

We took our time traveling down Interstate 90 through the state. Our first stop was in Mitchell - home of the Corn Palace. We thought it would be some kind of corny tourist trap, but it turned out to be pretty a-maizing. The outside of the palace and the auditorium are covered with murals, made entirely of different-colored corn cobs and husks...think of it as a big corn-by-number. Artists design new themes each year, and it costs the town of Mitchell $130,000 annually to decorate the building. Admission is free, so they rely entirely on donations from tourists like us. We found it to be quite ear-resistable.

A local basketball team - The Kernels (no, really) - uses the auditorium for their tournaments. I heard they got creamed during the last game. The fans were so mad, they started stalking the players. Okay, I'll stop now. Shucks.
