Miracles

I've been thinking alot about God lately. And Divine Intervention. And miracles.

Most of you know that my brother Jeremy and his wife Charity were involved in a serious (albeit freaky) car accident on January 25th. What you may not know is that a number of extraordinary things happened that night, which I believe to be miraculous.

On that Sunday evening, Charity (in my parent's suburban) was heading north down a lonely, rural dirt road, when Jeremy (driving west in a separate vehicle) collided with her at an unmarked intersection. From what we can tell, Jeremy's car rolled several times upon impact, and Charity's suburban was forced into a telephone pole.

Miracle #1 is that both survived the accident. People who have seen the wreckage all say the same thing: "I can't believe they are both alive."

Miracle #2 was that Charity managed to crawl out of the mangled suburban, where she found Jeremy laying in a field. She dragged him back into his car, covered him with a jacket, and went for help. She walked, injured and bleeding, for two miles in the bitter cold, until she came upon a neighboring farmhouse. Miracle #3 is that someone was there to help her.

Charity received several stitches in a local hospital, and Jeremy was flown to a trauma center in Wichita. He suffered a concussion, broken pelvis and hip, broken rib, broken jaw, lacerated spleen and liver, glass fragments in his eye, and several cuts and bruises. And as terrible as it all was, his injuries were treatable and were not life threatening. Miracle #4. Several doctors and nurses even said that, given the severity of the wreck, he was in remarkably good shape. And Charity? She had a cut on the head, terrible bruises, lots of scratches, cuts and sore spots...but she literally "walked away" okay. Miracle #5.

Another miracle is that Jeremy and Charity's five children were not in either car at the time of the wreck. They had been dropped off at home just a short time before. And as bad as the situation was, it could have been so much worse if the kids were involved.

Jeremy has since undergone surgery on his hip and jaw, and remains in the hospital. He has a long road to recovery ahead of him, but will be fine. Heck, he may even come out of the ordeal even better looking, with his new chin. We'll call him, "Mr. Hollywood."

I'm so happy that our family (immediate and extended) and friends have pulled together to help during the last two weeks, and that we can even begin to joke about the situation...a little. I thank God for sparing Jeremy and Charity's lives, and I know that He must have something special planned for both of them.
